Pro Ana Plague

This is the "ABC Diet";  A fifty day starvation method under the guise of a "diet".  The essential theory of the "diet" is based on the concept that calorie shifting is the easiest and fastest means to lose weight. When you reduce your food intake so sudden the idea is that your body shifts into "starvation mode", which is an evolutionary defense mechanism that causes your metabolism to become more efficient in order to cope with the sudden shortage of food. Since calorie intake varies day by day, for example a day of 300 calories followed by a day of 800 calories then a fast, your body assumes it prevents the body from going into starvation mode. Instead, your metabolism anticipates another calorie intake on the fast day, thus your metabolism continues to try to burn any remaining calories.

Obviously this is one of the least healthy ways to diet, however there are these "Pro Ana" diets plaguing the internet. On any blogging site it's not a difficult task to find Pro Ana pages devoted to pictures of hip bones, collar bones, and "Thinspiration" quotes. In my opinion, the internet has made finding things like this dangerously accessible. With just a few touches to the keyboard and the click of a mouse, one is able to find the most efficient way to starve themselves.

Posts such as this one promote a mentality that food is no longer necessary for nourishment, but something destructive and degrading. Years ago the media was blamed for corrupting society's views on how a woman should look; stick thin models and petite celebrities were considered the "bad influences". Now, it's everyone. It's young women blogging from their bedrooms about their weight loss progress, delivering an "If I can do it, so can you" message. I was floored upon reading some of the Pro Ana blogs out there and even more upset by Thinspiration messages such as this one.

  1. This is really disturbing that there's people out there that actually support garbage. You would think that with eating disorder and body image issues there would be more of an understanding and definitely more people out there that would stand up against this stuff. 800 calories isn't even enough for your body to burn if you were to lay completely still and do nothing all day. I've watched countless videos and movies on disorders like this and it's truly heartbreaking.

  2. I had a friend through high school that was morbidly obese, but she was one of the happiest and friendliest person out there. She would give you the shirt off her back. Within the past couple of years she's joined Jenny Craig and lost 60 lbs in about 4 months. After that it took a little more work to get the weight off and she resorted to bulimia. After she lost more weight she got attention from guys (which she never had before) and continued to gorge herself then purge. Today, she is still builimic but is no longer the happy go lucky person I've met. She is so desperate to be thin its sickening. I wish more than anything she would open her eyes and see what she's doing to herself. This blog reminds me so much of her because she IS the girl that would read that "thinspiration" and believe in it.

  3. I recently sat in on a presentation by Sara Martino who talked about body image and how we are bombarded by media images that press the "skinny is sexy" mentality. She said that nearly 50% of women have some sort of eating disorder which was insane to think. She said it could start as early as 7-9 years old so as some perspective teachers that's just another thing to keep in mind when dealing with kids, middle school and especially high school students.

  4. I am so glad someone is talking about this for their TED talk because this is a HUGE problem and so many people believe in these "diets". It is not healthy to cut any group of foods out of your diet. The best way to lose weight is to use a combination of diet AND exercise. Cut maybe 200 calories AND exercise. It blows my mind that some people are crazy enough to try that diet! I'm excited for your talk! :)
